General Culture:
Best grown in average, dry to medium wet, well-drained soil in full sun. Tolerates dry soils, but is intolerant of heavy clay soils. Flowers well without deadheading. Cut back flower stems at the end of the bloom season, however, to promote vegetative growth.
Noteworthy Characteristics: Produces masses of large, crimson red blossoms from early summer all the way into early fall, even under hot and dry conditions. About 20% of the flowers will have slight yellow tips. Has a nice short, compact size and uniform habit.
Problems:
No serious insect or disease problems. Some susceptibility to leaf spot, powdery mildew and aster yellows. Wet soils in winter can be fatal.
Uses:
Provides long-lasting summer bloom for the perennial border or cutting garden. Excellent fresh cut flower. May be naturalized in wild areas.
